Staff Picks: 2012-2013 NCAA Basketball Conference Tournament Picks – Week 1

Its official – conference tournament season is underway. With a number of conferences wrapping up their regular season over the weekend, the low and mid-major conferences will open up post-season play this week, with automatic bids on the line. Four automatic bids will be handed out this week, to champions of the Atlantic Sun, Big South, Missouri Valley, and Ohio Valley. Conference tournaments will also begin in ten other conferences this week, with the America East, Colonial, Horizon League, MAAC, Northeast, Patriot League, Southern, Summit, Sun Belt, and West Coast.

We are going to pick all 31 automatic bids. Once the regular season concludes, and the brackets in the 30 conference has been decided, we will make our selection on that conference’s automatic bid. Because the Ivy League bid could be decided in the next few weekends, and because the Ivy League doesn’t have a conference tournament, we have completed our picks.

For the ACC, Big XII, Big Ten, Big East, PAC-12, and SEC we will fill out the entire conference tournament bracket, picking just more than the champion – we will pick each game. Also, by staff choice, we will fill out brackets for the Atlantic 10 and Mountain West conferences.

Here is how we will score it: Any conference champion will be worth 16 points. Picking the participants of the finals correctly will be worth 8 each, for a total of 16. Picking the participants of the semifinals correctly will be worth 4 each, for a total of 16. Where there are four rounds, the first round winners will be worth 2 each; where there are five rounds, the first round winners will be worth 1 each, and the second round worth 2 each.

Using the Big Ten as an example, first round winners will be worth 2 each, with a maximum of 8 points possible. Second round (quarterfinal) winners will be worth 4 each, with a maximum of 16 points possible. Third round (semifinal) winners will be worth 8 each, with a maximum of 16 points. The champion is worth 16. So the entire Big Ten Tournament will be worth 56 points.
