2012 Sun Belt Football Projections

By: Maize_in_Spartyland

Now just 22 days from the beginning of college football, its time to unveil the 2012 Sun Belt Conference projections! The South Alabama Jaguars open Thursday, August 30 against fellow FBS newcomer UTSA Roadrunners at 7:30 PM ET on ESPN3. Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders looks to turn the page from a 2011 season to forget, when they face FCS McNeese State Cowboys at 8:00 PM EST on ESPN3. On Friday, August 31, Florida Atlantic is the sole Sun Belt team in action, facing FCS Wagner Seahawks at 7:00 PM EST, Carl Pelini’s debut as the Owls’ head coach.

On Saturday, six more Sun Belt teams will play.  The Troy Trojans look to rise back to the top of the Sun Belt, opening with rival UAB Blazers at noon.  Western Kentucky meets FCS Austin Peay Governors, North Texas Mean Green travel to Baton Rouge to face the reigning SEC Champion LSU Tigers, Florida International University Golden Panthers take on the Duke Blue Devils in Durham, and the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns host FCS Lamar Cardinals – all games begin at 7:00 PM EST.  Arkansas State plays in the late game, at 10:30 PM EST, at the Oregon Ducks, which will be televised on ESPN. The Red Wolves head coach, Gus Malzahn, makes his head coaching debut. Only the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks do not play week 1.

Meet the favorites . . .

(1) Troy Trojans

Quarterback Corey Robinson returns under center and the defense should be much improved. Having Louisiana-Lafayette, Florida International, and Arkansas State at home helps. The Trojans do not play Louisiana-Monroe in 2012.

(2) FIU Golden Panthers

FIU loses their starting QB, but more importantly they lose RB Darriet Perry and WR T.Y. Hilton. Loses of those skilled players could prevent FIU from winning the Sun Belt, but it shouldn’t prevent a solid season. FIU faces conference favorites UCF and Louisville in non-conference, which should provide a good test prior to conference play. FIU avoids North Texas this year.

(3) Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns

To say the Ragin’ Cajuns have a tough non-conference slate may be an understatement. They play at Oklahoma State and Florida, but to play host to Lamar and Tulane. Expecting nine wins again this season may be a tall task, but ULL still has a great shot at a bowl game. Note the first four games for ULL – Lamar, at Troy, at Oklahoma State, and Florida International. The Cajuns could very well be 1-3 heading into the game against in-state Tulane.
