2012 Fresno State Bulldogs Football Preview
2011 Record: 4-9 (3-4 Western Athletic) (Mountain West in 2012)
Head Coach: Tim DeRuyter, first season (1-0 overall)
Projected Returning Starters: 16
Spring Game: March 25th (Red 21 White 14)
Notes: At the end of last season, the Pat Hill era came to an end, with Fresno State firing the head coach. Hill was notorious for playing a tough non-conference schedule, while his teams finished no worse than fifth in the WAC. The Bulldogs made 11 bowl games in 15 seasons, finishing the 2004 season ranked 22nd. Due to declining attendance, the Bulldogs dismissed Hill. His defenses weren’t great the past few years, but we feel he was wrongly dismissed.
BVTSB Take: Quarterback David Carr, who took all the snaps under center last season, will return. His 2.9 touchdown-to-interception ratio looks very good. Running back Robbie Rouse, accounted for 85.6% of the Bulldogs’ rushing yards, and wide receiver Jalen Saunders, accounted for 30% of the Bulldogs’ receiving yards, will also return in 2012. The biggest problem will be the defense, which gave up 35.2 points per game last season, 106th in the county. If the Bulldogs can’t stop their opponents, they’ll be headed for another losing season. Fresno State had 6 games decided by a touchdown or less, going 2-4 in those games. The Bulldogs should improve on last season’s win total, but the defense will determine whether this team is bowl eligible.
2012 Early Projection: 7-5
