The Toronto Maple Leafs have been at or near the top of the league for the first month of the season. Who would have thought?!
To date, Kessel has been flying high and lighting the lamp, Phaneuf is +5 so far, and goaltending has been solid but not spectacular when Reimer has been between the pipes.
Unfortunately for Leafs faithful, their team is beginning to fall as fast and as heavy as the leaves outside. Reimer’s concussed, and the Gustavsson-Scrivens tandem has put up atrocious numbers when attempting to backstop in net. (each is sub- .880 SV%, while allowing 3.50+ goals against.)
Through their last two games, they’ve been outscored 12 – 1, falling 7 – goose egg to the lowly Bruins, and 5-1 to the Panthers.
The team hopes to regain traction and reassert itself today against St. Louis, but the question is: how far will the Leafs fall from the upper echelons of the hockey tree?
