Now just 13 days from the beginning of college football, its time to unveil the 2012 ACC-Atlantic Division projections! On Friday, August 31, the North Carolina State Wolfpack will take on the Tennessee Volunteers at the Georgia Dome, in Atlanta, at 7:30 PM EST on ESPNU.

On Saturday, September 1, the Maryland Terrapins will begin their second season under Coach Randy Edsall, hosting FCS William & Mary Tribe at 3:30 PM EST on ESPN3. A battle of former Big East rivals is on center stage at 3:30 PM EST, on ABC/ESPN2, as the Boston College Eagles meet the University of Miami Hurricanes in Chestnut Hill. The Florida State Seminoles begin their chances at a National Championship, as they host FCS Murray State Racers at 6:00 PM EST on ESPN3. The Wake Forest Demon Deacons open their season hosting FCS Liberty Flames, at 6:30 PM EST on ESPN3, now coached by, former Kansas and Buffalo coach, Turner Gill. At 7:00 PM EST, the Clemson Tigers will face the Auburn Tigers at the Georgia Dome on ESPN.

Meet the favorites . . .

(1) Florida State Seminoles

To say Jimbo Fisher is on the hot seat is probably not accurate. But he has, arguably, failed to live up to expectations. Is that the fault of Coach Fisher or the expectations being too high? Might be a combination of the two. Note Florida State’s non-conference schedule, which includes not only games against South Florida and Florida, but also against two FCS opponents. Its likely that any ONE loss likely knocks the Seminoles out of the BCS National Championship Game. The ‘Noles have the benefit of playing Clemson at home, but do travel to North Carolina State and Virginia Tech. Double digit wins are well within reach.

(2) Clemson Tigers

After years of underachieving, the Clemson Tigers came out of nowhere last season, winning the Atlantic Division largely behind the connection of QB Tajh Boyd and WR Sammy Watkins. Now that the secret is out, will the Tigers continue to be as successful as they were in the 2011 season? They were 3-0 in games decided by a touchdown or less, including an eight point win over the in-state FCS Wofford Terriers. The offense put up ridiculous numbers and the defense looked downright bad at times, allowing 30 points or more a game 7 times. Expect Clemson to have a little bit of a regression this season.

(3) North Carolina State Wolfpack

I’ll be honest, North Carolina State is my dark horse pick to win the Atlantic Division. I love what Tom O’Brien has done with this team, especially with Russell Wilson’s transfer to Wisconsin last season. Unlike Clemson and Florida State, who both face Virginia Tech, the Wolfpack avoid the Hokies. In fact, the Wolfpack draw Miami, North Carolina, and Virginia out of the Coastal. The Hurricanes and Cavaliers are expected to have rebuilding seasons, while the Tar Heels could be a favorite if not for the fact they are on probation. The Wolfpack have Florida State at home and Clemson on the road. I like NC State to exceed last year’s win total in 2012.
